ICE Malta student is Betsson Group’s new Network & Security Specialist. Meet Joseph.

Joseph Lomax has recently joined one of the world’s top iGaming brands Betsson Group as Network & Security Specialist and we couldn’t be prouder. During these last years, his learning journey has been continuous and he has successfully positioned himself as a top tech talent equipped with crucial industry certifications such as LPIC-1 and AWS. He shares what life at Betsson is like, his experience learning Online Live and why talent already working at top brands must continue to level up. This is his story.

You’ve been in the tech arena for quite a few years now, why is it important for talent to continue to gain in-demand skills during their selected career path?

The tech arena is one of the fastest-paced industries, change is constant, innovation is continuous and if you are not agile and constantly learning then it’s very easy to fall behind. By attending part-time courses while working full-time, talent has the opportunity to experience the best of both worlds and apply what they are learning quicker. Gaining in-demand industry skills is essential.

You enrolled for both LPIC-1 and AWS – what was your study experience like?
Given that I had only a few experiences within these areas, I wanted to get a better understanding of the Linux world and the AWS cloud to enhance my IT skill-set even further. The overall experience was challenging at first but really satisfying by the end of it. I gained essential knowledge I needed from both courses to continue to strengthen my performance and CV. In fact, in my new role at Betsson Group, I am now experiencing both technologies which I have learned during my studies.
What are your favourite Online Live features?
Following Online Live lectures and participating during lessons is very straightforward. Communication with the tutors can still be done both ways especially with the screen sharing feature which makes life even easier and helps students understand the course content better. The fact that we can learn from anywhere is a huge plus.
You’ve recently joined the Betsson team, what’s working for this top brand like?
Yes, Betsson Group is one of the top gaming companies within the gaming industry and working for this award-winning brand is really rewarding. The environment is wonderful, and I love the culture here. Being a multinational company, you get to know lots of different people from different countries all over the world. Apart from that, there are lots of things to learn here, both from the gaming and the technological side of things – which is great!
What’s next for you?
Working within the tech industry requires that you stay updated with the latest technologies be it by attending courses or doing self-research. I am not a person that keeps back from learning new things. In fact, I managed to achieve my BSc Degree and other industry certifications while working full time, this has been extremely rewarding. My goal now is to settle well in my new role here at Betsson Group and apply the new skills I have learnt at ICE Malta in my new role. To complement this, I am also planning to attend a couple of other courses either in AWS or related to my area of expertise which will enhance my abilities even further.
Your message to talent who are already in the game and want to challenge themselves to achieve even more career success.
It is never too late to learn new things! Growth begins when you step out of your comfort zone and once you take the leap, beautiful things will happen to you. Do what you love however, also challenge yourself as this is what will make your career more interesting and rewarding.
