From the heavy machine industry to the MFSA offices. Meet Stephen.

Before enrolling for his first course at ICE Malta, Stephen’s goal was to change career paths and eventually work in the ICT arena. After earning the prestigious CCNA, LPIC-1 & MCSA Server 2016 certifications and gaining crucial in-demand industry skills, he closed a very rewarding chapter at Malta Freeport and moved to MFSA as a Service and Support Officer. This is his story.

What inspired you to invest in your learning journey?
Technology is evolving at a rapid pace therefore to remain competitive, knowledgeable and relevant, learning in-demand industry skills is crucial. Following recommendations from some trusted friends as well as consultation with ICE Malta’s Admissions Team, I designed a learning journey which includes three industry heavyweight courses namely CCNA, LPIC-1 & MCSA Server 2016.
Back then, where were you working and why did you want to make a change?

After eleven years in the heavy machine industry as an electrical and electronics technician, I wanted to make a change, I wanted a new challenge. I’ve always loved technology so I decided that a career in the IT arena would be my next goal.

What features from the study experience did you find to be the most effective?
I invested in back-to-back courses at ICE Malta as I felt supported throughout my learning journey plus the fact that you are taught by an industry expert who has valuable experience and insight to share really makes learning more effective. Learning a combination of industry skills and gaining in-demand worldwide recognised certifications is always a great investment because they help make you versatile and able to adapt and progress faster.
You decided to commit to back-to-back learning – what were the benefits of this?
I decided to deep-dive in world-class learning and jump from one course to another and while this was tough because the study programmes I selected are considered to be some of the most demanding, I managed to build strong momentum thanks to my commitment, time management and the support of my family. The major advantage is that I reached my goal to work in the IT arena in a relatively short time-frame. Also, while the beginning is difficult when you find a formula that works for you might as well keep going.
Where are you working now? Tell us about your new role.
My first career step in the ICT arena is at MFSA (Malta Financial Service Authority) as a Service and Support Officer and I must say that I am really enjoying it. Various jobs and diverse projects I am entrusted to work on make me look forward to every single day. Also, the team has been extremely welcoming and very helpful which is great.
What is your message to students who would like to make a career change but are scared to take the first step?
It is never too late! Don’t keep yourself back. Apart from being extremely committed to my career, I am also a husband and a father – so juggling work, life and studies isn’t easy, I understand, however with commitment, dedication and world-class learning you can achieve your dream career too.
Stephen’s story proves that if you’re serious about your aspirations and you’re ready to put in the work, then world-class learning will elevate your career and shatter any of your goals. His switch to the tech arena is the first in a long list of celebrations this talented student has ahead of him and we’re so proud to be by his side to watch him succeed.
