All industries need digital marketing skills. Meet Harley.

Malta Gaming Authority’s new Corporate Affairs Officer Harley Mallia enrolled for the Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing course when she was working at one of the island’s leading events and entertainment brands. Her switch to a different industry continues to confirm that digital marketing skills are crucial no matter what your profession is. This is her story.

What motivated you to enrol for the Diploma in Digital Marketing?
At the beginning of the year, I was working at JUGS Malta where I was given the opportunity to take care of marketing the brand. Just before I took on this new role I realised that although I knew the basics, there was a whole world of knowledge that I needed to explore in order to do my new job better. Marketing, especially digital, is ever-changing, so this course would enable me to not only get up to speed with what leaders of the industry are doing but also keep me up to date following completion. My employers and I decided that studying at ICE Malta was the best way forward, and I couldn’t be happier. I have since moved on from the events and entertainment industry and now work at the Malta Gaming Authority.
What was your favourite part of your study experience?
I cannot even begin to explain how grateful I am that I completed this course in 2020, right before the effects of the pandemic hit the country. It not only opened a new door career-wise, but it also solidified my digital skills at the perfect time. The MGA, like most other workplaces, has adopted a remote-first approach, which in turn means that our digital communication, both internally as well as with the industry, needs to be up to standard.
What part of the study experience did you love the most?
I find it difficult to pick one, but probably the highlight was meeting like-minded individuals in my class. Everyone was eager to learn, some people were already experienced, and we all meshed together very well. Our lecturers managed to bring out the best in us and inspire us to be better at what we do. In short, it’s the people that made it an even better experience.
How did you prepare for your exam?
Studying has always been a struggle (anyone whose attention span is as short as mine can relate) but for this course, it was somehow different. Every subject within each module had a practical test which you can take over and over again, which made studying much more interactive than just reading notes and slides. We were also automatically made DMI Members, which gives us access to some great content, most of which is relevant to the job and in turn the exam. Definitely made my learning experience much better!
Digital marketing has become fundamental for all professionals across all industries – why does everyone need solid foundations in digital?

The ‘why’ is pretty obvious for me – digital has always been the way forward, and 2020 has simply accelerated this. The ‘how’, in my opinion, is what makes or breaks you. Putting in effort in digital without having the right background is, put simply, a waste of time. Learning how to do things properly will produce higher quality work and better results.

What’s your learning goal for 2021?
So many! The Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing has really expanded my horizons, and I’ve seen how endless the possibilities are in this industry. The post-graduate diploma is calling my name, but I’ve also taken a keen interest in design, something which I was never interested in before. One step at a time – we’ll see where this journey takes me!
Harley has the attitude, in-demand skills and determination to continue to progress swiftly and we’re super proud to be by her side cheering her on. More success is round the corner for this talent, we know it.
