A career change during the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to online live learning. Meet Claire.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it a number of challenges for talent across all industries however it also was a trigger for individuals to take charge of their careers. Claire Mangion left her job as a receptionist at a hotel and scored a rewarding career opportunity as a graphic designer at iGaming brand Acroud after completing the Graphic Designer Associate course. This is her inspiring story.

What was your move from the hospitality industry to iGaming in the middle of the COVID-19 like?

I felt stuck for a while and felt the need to switch industries and follow my dreams, so I took the leap of faith and tried something that I had wanted to give a shot for a while. During the pandemic, I enrolled for a course with ICE Malta and as the saying goes, the rest is history.

What is your new present role? How are you using your new industry skills at work?
The experience with Acroud has been nothing but amazing. I started part-time as a junior graphic designer not knowing what to expect as it was my first job in this field and now, I am a full-time graphic designer with this fast-growing brand. Thanks to ICE Malta I scored this great career opportunity and I’m happy to share that my learning continues on a day-to-day basis as I learn so much from my colleagues too.
What was your favourite online live study experience feature?
My favourite thing about online live learning is that you can attend classes from any location of your choice and you can rewatch your lesson again. This means that if you miss a class, want to revise, or take your notes you can do so between one lesson and another too.
What is working at an iGaming brand like?
iGaming brands such as Acroud implement training and mentoring programmes across the board to continually develop their workforce, which means employees get unlimited opportunities to learn new skills. This has also been the first time I have been given the opportunity to work remotely. I like that I have more control over my work schedules, I can free up time to take care of the things that crop up in my personal life —whether it’s running an errand or being home for a delivery. I also enjoy going to the office a couple of days a week, to meet up with colleagues – so really I have the best of both worlds.
What have you learnt about yourself during this whole experience?
I’ve learnt that if you put your mind to something that you want then you will accomplish it. Of course, every day isn’t always going to be perfect, some days are challenging however if you look on the bright side, the difficult days can be just another way to grow in both your career and life in general. Being able to remain positive is an invaluable life lesson I have learnt.
What is your message to individuals who feel that they are stuck in a career that they don’t love?
Starting a new career can feel challenging, frightening, impossible, and overwhelming however you really do have the power to make a career change at any time. I felt stuck for a long time, and I am glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and made this decision because I would not be where I am today if I hadn’t. At the end of it all, it has been extremely rewarding and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me.
Claire’s story proves that if you enrol for the Graphic Designer Associate course and learn how to use industry tools such as Photoshop, InDesign or Illustrator from an industry expert you will be able to confidently kick-start a wonderful career that will lead you to achieve even further success. We are sure that this is just the beginning of an exceptional career journey for Claire and we can’t wait to welcome her back to ICE Malta for more online live learning.
