ICE Malta is proud to announce that the institute has been acknowledged as an ambassador for Girls in ICT Day celebrated all over the world. International Girls’ in ICT day is an initiative hosted locally by ICE Malta, with the support of the International Telecommunications Union as well as the European Parliament. The aim of the world event celebrated extensively all over Europe, is to empower and encourage girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technology. This year, International Girls in ICT Day will be celebrated on the 25th of April 2013 and Malta have now confirmed participation thanks to ICE Malta.

“Last year saw almost 90 countries take part in the project, with some 1,300 events organised throughout the world and some 30,000 girls directly empowered with the knowledge that ICT careers can really be for them. We are delighted to count on ICE Malta’s participation in the worldwide celebrations of International Girls in ICT Day, this will certainly reinforce Malta’s position as an ICT hub of excellence and make for a more gender-balanced ICT sector in the island.” Nicolas Jammes, Project Coordinator, ITU-Global Girls in ICT Day Project explained.

‘Globally it is estimated that the world shortfall in skilled ICT professionals exceeds two million. Furthermore with the constant branding of Malta as an ICT hub of excellence and constant referral to our islands as ‘SMART islands’, we feel that is is of utmost importance to ensure that our workforce has the necessary ICT skills and world wide recognized certifications to ensure that locally we are exceptional contenders for careers in the ICT industry all over the world. During our 2013/2014 strategy plan, ICE Malta welcomed some of the creative industry’s key leaders to meet the institute’s top creative design students during the first edition of the Creative Design Student Showcase 2013. ICE Malta has also been accredited to encourage students to participate in the international Adobe Design Achievement 2013 awards as well as has been chosen as the official host for the National CISCO NetRiders Competition. We feel that it is our duty to inspire our students and share opportunities with them to truly make sure that they are given a career kick start.  While the number of female students continues to increase semester after semester, we feel that ‘Girls in ICT Day’ which is given so much importance in Europe really should also be celebrated on our islands. We’re proud to be the official ambassador for this prestigious event’ Nikolai Sammut, principal of ICE Malta commented.

An official agenda of events together with a competition will be launched in the coming weeks. ICE Malta would like to thank the Ministry of Education, Malta for their immediate support for this event, as well as the ITU-Global Girls in ICT Day Project division.
