After following a degree in ICT and a Masters in Telecommunications at the University of Malta, Sabrina Bilocca enrolled for ICE Malta’s Cisco CCNA Routing & Switching study programme and now works at Speedcast – a global satellite communications service provider which specialises in satellite connectivity for Energy, Maritime, NGOs and Mining divisions, amongst others. Here’s her story.
What part of ICE Malta’s Study Experience did you love most?
At ICE Malta, I loved the fact that we were assigned practical labs, industry-inspired scenarios and we were given the opportunity to work on hardware which truly gave us the ‘on-the-job’ experience which is crucial. Practical collaborative learning helped me to quickly understand the theoretical concepts better and prepare myself to confidently present solutions to industry challenges in more of an agile manner. My educator was outstanding, a true industry practitioner, a mentor with years of experience working with leading brands who clearly is passionate to share his insight with students. I also loved the quick response time of the team at ICE Malta who are always very efficient and made my study experience a memorable one.
When it comes to ICT learning, why is practical real-world learning crucial?
It’s important to understand the theoretical concepts, but it’s even more important to develop the practical skills and competencies by simulating an on-the-job experience. Practical real-world learning prepares students for the challenges they will eventually face in the field. The fact that we were also assigned group-work made learning more fun and gave us more insight as regards to what industry life really is like.
What is your message to students?
Whether you’re still a student or a professional, never stop learning – it is the key to success. Keep up-to-date with this fast-paced tech evolution, focus on your talents and work hard to succeed. Investing in learning reaps great benefits. Try it. You’ll see.
