The journey from tech support to Commercial Product Owner at Catena Media. Meet Thomas.

Back in 2016, Thomas Agius had enrolled for the Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing course because he wanted to kick-start a career in digital marketing. Months after he completed his exam, he landed a job opportunity Catena Media as SEO Strategist and since then he’s been building a rewarding career. Now he’s the Commercial Product Owner at this award-winning brand and he shares how the Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing course opened doors for him and why everyone needs to gain digital marketing skills. This is his story.

How did the Diploma in Digital Marketing course help you shift your career from tech support to SEO strategist?

Back when I had decided to enrol, the tech support/sysadmin career path was not a match for my personal goals, especially from the job satisfaction aspect. I wanted to look for a career that makes me look forward to coming to my job the next day. Digital marketing has opened an entirely new world of possibilities where my performance mattered to the company and the colleagues around me. Besides that, it is an exciting industry where continuous new updates to the marketing platforms are on the go which keeps the job exciting and more rewarding.

What has these five years working in digital marketing been like?
Exciting and challenging at the same time, I was pursuing my dreams but at the same time it is was not easy getting used to an entirely new industry. My IT background has helped me speed things up through most of what is considered the hardest part especially when it came to SEO specialisation. I have learned a lot by going after challenging tasks whilst using the digital skills I acquired.
What had you loved about your study experience?
Having ongoing contact with the tutors and real-life examples have made studying the course a breeze. We went into enough depth to know the basics of each marketing channel and with that knowledge, we could practice it in real life after a few days of learning it.
What’s your latest career challenge?
I have now moved to Product Management where I continue to make use of my digital marketing skills since the basic know-how about how each department works allowed me to have a better edge than others starting out in the same role.
What will feature next in your learning journey?
I believe in lifelong learning and whether it is to enhance my product skills or digital marketing they will both add value to my career path and my employer. My aim is to add more to my skill set so that I am able to help the customer meet with the product they are looking for whilst assisting company growth.
Why does everyone need to gain digital marketing skills?
Whether you’re an entrepreneur, self-employed or someone that genuinely likes to use marketing channels such as social media, you will benefit from understanding what you are using. Digital marketing skills are now essential as much as being computer-literate, not only will these skills allow you to use the channels better but it will also protect you from harmful and misleading information that you can easily detect with basic digital marketing skills.
