The skills to gain to become unstoppable. Meet Kayne.

When COVID-19 hit Kayne Said ended up in between jobs. Instead of going into panic mode he dove into online live learning and enrolled in the Graphic Designer Associate course. His strategy was to level up with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign & Illustrator skills which would be useful no matter what his next career step would be. Today he’s back at the Responsible Gaming Foundation and he’s sharing why these tools are essential for talent across any industry. This is his story.

You enrolled for an ICE Malta course in the middle of COVID-19. What was going on in your career during this time?

I enrolled in the MySuccess Graphic Designer Adobe Associate Course at ICE Malta in a less calm and somewhat risky stage of my personal and professional life. We were right in the middle of the pandemic hitting our beloved islands and affecting all our modus operandi. As a repercussion of the same pandemic and other unfortunate events, I ended up in between jobs. At the same time, I became a father for the first time. With quite a strong positive attitude and after careful deliberation with my family, we concluded this was the right time for me to further my studies. Following my degree, at University I had always wished to continue studying however other things took priority and 2020 turned out to be my time to gain new skills.

Why did you choose the Graphic Designer Associate course?
Throughout my career, I was always interested in graphic design career opportunities. At every place, I have worked, including the years I spent working for a local newspaper as head of shift, my basic graphic design skills always came in handy, and today they are a big part of my job too. Back then I was self-taught both in Indesign and Photoshop however I knew that there was so much more for me to learn and this was one of the main reasons I enrolled.
What are the benefits of Online Live learning?
At first, I was a bit sceptical, preferring the face-to-face interaction a classroom may offer. However, when the course commenced, I immediately identified the benefits. Nowadays, I prefer online live learning as I can stay in the comfort of my own home and I am faced with much less time spent travelling and/or in traffic when rush hour hits.
What advice would you give students who are about to embark on an online live experience?
When there is a will, there is always a way! When ending up in not so calm waters of a professional career, it is always an opportunity to find ways and means to further your knowledge and continue studying.
Why are Photoshop, InDesign & Illustrator essential tools for talent to get familiar with?
I will continue to use these industry tools in my current role for sure. They are ideal for photo manipulation, logo creation, and designing print material such as reports, which at the majority of workplaces are requested on an ongoing basis.
What’s your next step?
I will apply everything I learnt during the Graphic Designer Associate course to provide high-quality deliverables and to create more interesting visual material in my line of work. I always aspire to build on my insight and skills. I am sure that this learning experience will help me step up in my career.
Kayne reminds us all that gaining the in-demand transferrable skills gives us career agility and helps us progress from one opportunity to the next swiftly. He has a bright future ahead and we are certain that he will continue to make us proud and apply his new design skills at the Responsible Gaming Foundation as well as in other projects that he is sure to be invited to be a part of because of his drive, determination, positive mindset and industry skills.
