From a heavy machinery worker at Malta Freeport to a career in tech. Meet Jurgen.

After 11 years focused on fault-finding of heavy machinery and dock cranes at The Malta Freeport, Jurgen Incorvaja decided that it was time for a career change. He opted for back-to-back world-class learning starting off with Cisco CCNA, then moving on to MCSA Windows Server 2016 and finally completed the trifecta of tech learning with LPIC-1 Linux Administrator. He’s now working as an IT Systems Professional at iLink Systems Ltd and is driven to continue to climb the career ladder fast. This is his story.

What inspired you to invest in your learning journey?
During my 11 years working as an Electrical and Electronics Technician at the Malta Freeport, I was always very inspired by friends who decided to invest in learning so that they’d be able to start a new career chapter. When ICE Malta launched their alumni top stories and I started to see how many people are actually managing to take control of their career I decided that I wanted to take their lead too.
Where did you work before and why did you want to make a change?
I had many rewarding moments at the Malta Freeport in particular the opportunity to expand my skill-set and work in different sectors, however, I came to a point where I wanted to progress faster, focus on tech and challenge myself so that I could consider new career opportunities.
What features from the Study Experience did you like most?
The fact that the tech skills you gain are in-demand by the industry is great – this means that all that you are learning is relevant. Also the lecturers teach in a practical manner and focus on ‘on the job’ challenges which makes learning more interesting and fun. Finally, the fact that you are gaining certifications by leading brands which are recognised globally is the cherry on the cake.
What were the benefits of back-to-back learning?
I set myself up for a big challenge because the three courses I selected to embark on namely Networks (CCNA), Servers (MCSA) and Operating Systems (LPIC-1) require focus and a substantial amount of study time. As soon as I started to build momentum in my learning journey I wanted to continue so that I could score a career opportunity with a tech brand as soon as possible.
What is your message to students who would like to make a career change but are scared to take the first step?

Never give up on your dreams and don’t let your age hold you back from making a change – it’s never too early or late to invest in yourself. There are plenty of career opportunities for those who are determined and choose ICE Malta as their learning partner.

Jurgen’s story continues to prove that thanks to world-class learning and determination all career goals can be reached. We are extremely proud of this student and can’t wait to watch him progress steadily and celebrate even more career success stories in the coming years.
