Digital marketing for social and civic causes. Meet Nicole.

Nicole Park graduated from MCAST with qualifications in Art & Design, 3D Design & Interiors, and a B.A.(Hons) in Photography. Finding herself intrigued by digital marketing, she enrolled for the Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing and boosted her new career with the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD). Her impressive portfolio of digital and creative skills has empowered her to create viral social-interest campaigns and to be a mentor for young Erasmus students. This is her story.

Can you tell us a little about your career background?

My first full-time job was with a small private Integrated Marketing Communications Agency, working as an Assistant Photographer/Videographer/Graphic Designer. When COVID hit, I realised that even though I had gained a lot of knowledge in marketing during two years in employment, I could be in a better position if I was qualified in marketing.

What made you turn towards digital marketing?

At the beginning of 2021, I got the opportunity to do a 3-month internship and train as a Social Media Coordinator – it was thanks to the individual who carried out the training that I confirmed what I really wanted to do in my life – to be a Digital Marketer!

During my research, the adverts that I viewed regarding Digital Marketing furnished me with information on how this new qualification was helping people (especially during the pandemic) to improve the skills that they might already have had and enhance them to pursue a better career. ICE Malta was the first institution that appeared on my screen and after reading the brief about their Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing course, I was convinced that this was the one for me to dive into.

What made you decide to study the Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing with ICE Malta?

I was job-hunting at the time that I applied for the said course in July 2021. In fact, it was then that I applied for the post of Assistant Manager. As luck would have it, I got the job! My superiors supported me throughout my studies at ICE Malta and encouraged me to continue learning and improving myself.

The course allowed me to dive deep into real-world scenarios and learn from top industry practitioners. All the modules in the course were designed by professionals whose line of work is Digital Marketing. What they have experienced is all wrapped in one exciting package. I couldn’t ask for anything better than this!

How was your study experience? Are there any particular skills that have come in useful in your work?

ICE Malta made things easier for me as I was able to take the course online and opt for it as part-time alongside my full-time job. During my working day, I was practising the skills that I was learning and obviously, this was advantageous to me because it helped me to memorise all the knowledge that I was acquiring. I have always been a practical learner and therefore this mode of learning was ideal for me.

It was my first time doing a course online. Edward Mallia, the lecturer, always made sure to make our lectures easy to remember and was always there to answer all my questions, even after lectures were over. I found the Introduction to Digital Marketing, Social Media Marketing, SEO and Google analytics modules very enlightening. My knowledge was quite limited in these particular topics, so ICE Malta definitely helped me to master the skills involved and use them in my current job.

How did digital marketing fit in with your art, design, and photography skills?

Digital Marketing fits very well along with what I have learned at MCAST. For example, I had the skills to create and develop visuals, but then ICE showed me how to promote the campaigns, attract the right clients on social media, and use social listening techniques to monitor my progress. I don’t think I would have been able to carry out my current job professionally without ICE Malta’s expertise and guidance.

What do you most enjoy about your current role with CRPD?

My position with CRPD allows me to be as creative as possible whilst educating persons with disability, their families and the general public about what we do. Digital Marketing is a great way to communicate and raise awareness about disability issues on a daily basis.

My first task that was a big hit was the “Accessible Beaches in Malta and Gozo” poster. Considering that I grew up with an autistic brother, my life always revolved around disability, so I found it easier to think outside the box and find better solutions on how to promote disability. Since it was Summer when I started working with CRPD and till then I had never come across any information about accessible beaches, I decided that that was going to be my first project. After the poster was published, it spread on Social media like wildfire!

Do you have any other projects you’re particularly proud of?

CRPD collaborates with various NGO/DPOs – other projects that I was proud to work on include the “LGBT+Disability” campaign (which we did in collaboration with MGRM for Pride), the “ĊaVetta għall-Futur Project” (in collaboration with the University of Malta), as well as the “What have we learned? (X’Tgħallimna mill-Pandemija?)” project.

As for my previous work experiences, I’ve also had the opportunity to mentor Erasmus students coming from various European countries and from different backgrounds. I focus on art, design, photography, videography, project management and how to work under pressure. I aim at boosting not only their knowledge but also their self-confidence because from my first-hand experience I know that the transition from being a student to working in an actual work environment is not that easy. Sometimes it could be quite overwhelming! But some of the students that I mentored are still in contact with me and I’m delighted to hear that their experience in Malta expanded their horizons and helped them to find an ideal job.

Marketing isn’t just about businesses and making profits! With digital channels so prevalent across society, digital marketers carry enormous influence when it comes to raising awareness for important social and civic issues. We congratulate Nicole and we’re sure she’ll be making waves online again soon!
